This book takes place in the in the late 1950s early 1960s in Holcomb, Kansas. There are also flashbacks to places such as Alaska. THen the other part of the book follows the road trip of the murderers cross the country and part of Mexico.
Holcomb was a calm town that never had too much excitement so the towns people were shocked when the murder occurred.
The townspeople also had a hard time trusting Capote who was somewhat flamboyant and also a homosexual. They were not used to him and so he had trouble getting them to trust him, but in the end some did.
Perry had come from a broken home and Dick had come from a respectable one, though both had been involved in accidents and seemed to be mentally unstable.
