Herbert Clutter was married to Bonnie Mae Clutter. Together they had three daughters, Eveanna and Beverly and Nancy and one son, Kenyon. He was a prosperous Methodist farmer and greatly respected by the community

Bonnie Clutter
Bonnie Mae Fox Clutter was the wife of Herb Clutter. She was diagnosed with Clinical Depression ever since the birth of her children. She also was a part of the local gardening club.

Nancy Clutter
Nancy Clutter had been a perfect daughter. She had good grades, helped others, and was an active member of the 4-H club. Her death greatly affected her long term boyfriend Bobby Rupp.

Son of Bonnie and Herb, he was also a good student and a member of the 4-H club.

The Murderers
Perry Smith
One of the murderers of the Clutter family. He became close with Capote after his conviction. He came from a broken home where his mother was abusive. Both his brother and sister killed themselves leaving him with one sister, Barbara, who was scared of him. He claimed to have murdered a man to get in Dick's good graces which led to him being drafted for this particular crime. After his death he was found to have had a mental illness, paranoid schizophrenia, that may have led to his involvement in the crime.

He was successful in high school and had several sports scholarships offered to him, but then he got into a car accident and didn't attend any college. His parents were respectable people and raised their son the best that they could. He wasn't always a good son though as he did steal and was known to be a womanizer in high school but no one would tell his parents because of their respect towards them. He originally planned the murder to be a robbery as he was insecure about financially stability, but he wanted to kill any witnesses. He was known to have pedophilic tendencies.

He was the investigator associated with the Clutter murders by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. He became obsessed with the murders. The towns people blamed him for not being able to catch the murderers faster. He was close with the Clutters

John 'Tex' Smith
The Irish father of Perry. He was originally a rodeo performer which was where he met Flo. He and Perry opened an unsuccessful tourist lodge in Alaska which ended up ruining their relationship as they ran out of food.
Florence Julia 'Flo' Buckskin
The American Indian mother of Perry, also a rodeo star. She eventually became an abusive, alcoholic parent.
Barbara Johnson
Perry's only surviving sibling. She is afraid of her brother and so doesn't want to be associated with him.
Walter Sr. Hickok & Eunice Hickok
The respectable parents of Dick.
Floyd Wells
The ex-inmate of Dick. He used to work for Herb Clutter. He unknowingly gave Dick the idea to rob the Clutters as he told Dick that they were rich.
Don Cullivan
He used to be in the Army with Perry. He visited Perry in jail to convert him to Catholicism, though Perry does not convert but still wants Don as a friend.
Willie-Jay
Perry's resected friend from jail who wrote an analysis of Barbara's letter to Perry. He is greatly respected by Perry.
